Private James Thomas Wylie
James Thomas Wylie (or Wiley) was born on 26 April 1894 at Killee, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, the last of seven children of farmer Robert Wylie and his wife Mary Jane (nee Bracken). He grew up at Killee, but by 1911 was living with his sister and her husband at Kilsalagh, Castlecoole, and working as a farmer.
Wylie enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 18 February 1911 (No.581). He embarked for France with C Squadron on 20 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.
When Wylie's period of service ended he chose to leave the army. He was discharged at Antrim as 'time expired' on 17 February 1916.
After his discharge, Wylie farmed at Feddans in Fermanagh. On 26 June 1918 he married Rebecca Jane Daulton at Garvary Church. He died at Feddans on 28 March 1938.
Wylie's brother, Corporal Samuel John Wylie, also served in the war in the North Irish Horse. One of the two brothers is pictured here. He may also have been a cousin of North Irish Horsemen Robert Alexander Wylie and William James Wylie, from Cloghtogle, Lisbellaw.
